# What does good IT support mean for an SME in Helsinki?
6 September 2026 · 4 min read

In short: Good IT support for an SME means three things: a problem is solved with one contact, devices and systems stay in order without anyone asking, and someone comes on site whenever remote help is not enough. In Helsinki and the capital region that is possible the same day. Here is how to recognise good support and what to ask.

When a company has no IT department of its own, IT support is where everyday problems end up: a computer won’t start, email isn’t flowing, a new employee starts on Monday. The quality of the support shows in how many of these moments are left for the decision-maker to handle personally. Good support makes IT something you don’t need to think about.

## How do you recognise good IT support in everyday work?

There are three signs.

- One contact is enough. When an employee calls or sends a message, the same party takes ownership and says when it will be done. The matter doesn’t need explaining to three different people, and nobody has to chase it.

- Quiet. Most of good IT support is work nobody sees: updates install, backups are taken and their restore is tested, devices are under management and anomalies raise alerts. When this works, there are fewer support requests, because problems are fixed before they reach anyone’s desk.

- Directness. A good partner says what is worth doing and what is not, also when the answer means a smaller invoice. If something is not covered by the agreement, it is said in advance, not on the invoice.

## Why does location matter when most support is remote?

Most problems are solved over a remote connection in a few minutes: support connects to the computer and fixes the matter together with the user. Remote support works the same way in Helsinki, in Oulu and in an office abroad.

Location matters when a remote connection is not enough. A computer needs replacing, a network needs cabling, a meeting room needs equipping or a device is simply broken. Support based in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen can be on site the same day, and in that moment the difference from a remote-only service is concrete: work continues in the afternoon, not next week.

Location has another side too. When support visits regularly, it gets to know the premises, the network and the people. That familiarity makes remote support faster as well, because the background of a problem is already known.

## What does an SME need, and what does it not?

A company of ten or fifty people has different needs from a large organisation. What is needed:

- user support that answers

- device management that keeps Windows computers, Macs and phones in order

- management of tools such as Microsoft 365

- backups

- basic security such as two-factor authentication and updates

- monitoring that alerts on anomalies.

What is usually not needed: a server room of your own, a multi-tier ticketing system or round-the-clock on-call staff. A realistic model for an SME is that automation monitors the systems around the clock and raises alerts, and people resolve the alerts on weekdays. That is enough for most companies’ everyday needs, and it keeps the cost reasonable.

## What should you ask an IT partner?

Four questions tell you a lot.

- Who answers when I call, and what happens next? The answer reveals whether there are people or a queue.

- What do you take care of without my asking? The answer reveals whether maintenance is proactive or reactive.

- When do you come on site and what does it cost? The answer reveals whether on-site support is really part of the service.

- How does pricing work when headcount changes? The answer reveals whether the cost grows with the company or with the contract.

A good partner answers these plainly. If the answers are vague, that already says something about what the support is like when something is broken.

## How does this show in Developit’s IT support?

Our home turf is Helsinki, and on-site support covers Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen. Remote support works the same way all around Finland and at our customers’ offices abroad. Automation monitors the systems around the clock, and we resolve the alerts on weekdays. Pricing has two models, hourly billing and a monthly fee per user, and we tell you plainly which one is the smarter choice for your company. Windows and Mac are handled with the same approach, and we have been doing this since 2008.
